Bikini WednesdayBikini Wednesday, one of Charles Bertram's latest offerings, brings us the timely tale of a teenage Muslim girl and her desire to protest the strict Muslim rules for women.
After a positive reaction to a school report, our heroine, U.S. born Fatimah decides to protest Muslim women's rights by wearing a bikini to her local beach, never suspecting that a local surfer dude would capture her picture on his cell phone.
Fast forward, and I mean fast forward, to the resulting media frenzy when Fatimah and her bikini hit the Internet. If she only had the papparazzi to deal with she'd handle it, but the Muslim community in the U.S. and around the world is in an uproar and she's doing everything she can to stay one step ahead of her pursuers.
Bertram's forte is to pull us in to his tales, while we hold on tight and enjoy the ride. A creative blending of U.S., Muslim, Amish and Mormon culture has us learning as we go, flipping the pages, as fast Fatimah, can run for her life.

The plot is compelling but what truly makes "Bikini Wednesday" extraordinary is how emotionally invested you get into the 15-year old character Fatimah and how well Bertram creates this complex, naive teen-ager and places her in a terrifying, soul searching situation, threatened by her intolerant Muslim family and their perceived threat from Western culture.
I couldn't help but to be reminded of the clash-of-religions angle from last years event in Florida the battle for Rifqa Bary, a 17-year-old girl from Columbus, Ohio, who ran away to an Evangelical church in Orlando, Fla., because, she claims, her Muslim family had threatened to kill her for converting to Christianity.
I dare you to read this book without getting totally pulled in to the story. My heart was pounding within a few pages and I couldn't put this book down until I got to the last word. Fatimah has seen too much of the harsh reality of life for someone her age, and this dark desperation colors all the events in this book.
I was, simply put, blown away by this book. It is well written, intelligent, and impossible to forget. A week after finishing it, I'm still thinking about it. Bertam is now on my read list and I look forward to reading his next novel. I'm very impressed at the crisp writing and the constant movement. It's poignant, thoughtful, and Bertram has a talent for getting into the mind of his characters and taking his readers with him. It is quite amazing how everything falls into place.
As for the other medley of shorts, when you've absorbed that first one, it makes you need to find out what the next piece is like, so you reach further into the book. You always feel that you're in the hands of a master storyteller, and you can trust him to tell you a good story.
As someone who gobbles up good stories like others cookies, I would highly recommend this one.
