SEMI-FINALIST - Breakthrough Novel competition.
"A fusion of mainstream thriller and historical fiction reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code." --Kirkus Reviews.    CAIRO MUSEUM, 1983. --Rika Teferi is studying a royal papyrus when catastrophe strikes. An accidental spill damages the priceless document written by Queen Tiye, the mother of Tutankhamun. But the spill also exposes hidden writing. Aching to read the concealed text, Rika agrees to let visiting geologist, David Chamberlain, smuggle the papyrus out of the museum to scan it with specialized equipment.

The results are stunning. They reveal Tiye's final message to her son,as well as her real role in pharaonic Egypt and secret details of her last journey up the Nile, where she was to be buried alive in a bath of oil.

Rika feels a spiritual bond with Tiye, an African commoner who revolutionized society by introducing a religion that freed Egypt from the tyranny of the Amun priests. Desperate to know more, Rika devises a plan with David to locate Tiye's tomb. Their quest takes them deep into the desert where unforeseen peril threatens their very existence. To survive, Rika must draw upon all her resources and eventually must choose among her love of Queen Tiye, her allegiance to the freedom fighters of her homeland of Eritrea, and David.

--In a league with Michael Crichton, Dan Brown, and Wilbur Smith, John Oehler has created a cinematic page-turner of explosive yet poetic brilliance.

Readers who liked Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will love Rika.

In the interest of full disclosure, I came very close to shutting down this book after chapter 2 because I had an issue with certain character behavior/decisions. The book sat in my reading app for a few more days after that, until I finally admitted that there was something in the writing that called to me. The fact that I adore fiction set in ancient Egypt was an even bigger draw. So I opened Papyrus once more and kept on reading…

I was glad I didn’t toss the book aside.

Well-written, vivid, and action-packed, Papyrus is a thriller and then some. Even I, as an author, am envious of what Oehler pulled off. It’s rare I find a thriller that takes me for a ride all the way to the last page. The book had a movie-quality feel to it, in that I could very easily picture each scene and chapter in my head as if it were on a big screen.

Oehler did his research, and it shows. He also learned his craft, and it shows.

If it weren’t for those first 2 chapters, which still bug me just a bit, I’d have given this a 5. So I’ll settle on a 4 1/2. Highly recommended for those who love thrillers, fantasy, and ancient history.

Papyrus A Thriller edition by John Oehler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I like fiction set in Egypt. Although I typically read more historical settings, I enjoyed this story. Adventure, romance, mystery. Something for everyone in this book.

I think the author was knowledgeable on his subject matter to be able to skillfully weave fact and fiction and leave the reader guessing the thin lines between them. I had not experienced this author before and was pleasantly surprised. I had to suspend belief in a few places but, in general, the flow of the story carried me through.
I confess that Oehler's second book would not have grabbed me if I hadn't been so taken with his first novel. The thing that put me off right away might not bother most readers, and if fact might make the book more compelling.

Not being a fan of historical fiction, however, I frowned when I saw that Papyrus starts with a prologue from the 18th dynasty - only one page, but not my cup of tea by a long shot. Then it continues in 1977 - which is also somewhat historical.

Despite what for me was a rocky start, the story yanked me up, gave me a shiver and made me smile just a little - all in the prologue's second paragraph. Oehler knows how to quickly set a story in motion. Then as soon as I turned that first page, I was hooked.

Rika Teferi is a compelling hero, and her quest is both believable and entirely unexpected. In fact, Papyrus delivered one surprise after another as it took me on a riveting adventure to a time and place I'd never been before and had never even imagined.

It's a very good thing when a writer can score a winner on a first book, but it's truly amazing when the second novel surpasses the first. Oehler has a better grasp of his characters in this one and is extremely comfortable in his element, which combines exotic faraway places with a gripping sense of danger and a little romance in a storytelling style that's at once effortless and as close as the written word can get to actually planting us in the hero's shoes.
John Oehler has done it again. His last work, Aphrodesia, was such a great story it was a no brainer to get he latest work Papyrus. I was not disappointed. In a world I know little about, John took me on a journey with characters that were interesting and believable. Tying together events in the eighteenth dynasty and today provided depth and historic perspective to an engrossing tale.

The female lead, Rika Teferi, is strong, has an interesting background and knows what she wants. She is a nice match to the Queen Tiye in the eighteenth dynasty who is also strong, has an interesting background and knows what she wants. We follow the ladies as they come to a climax or turning point in their lives. In doing so we painlessly learn much of a culture in two different times.

John creates a real page-turner using a supporting cast of excellent characters. Nasty bad guys and strong good guys not always recognizable as such add texture and keep you involved with the story.

I recommend Papyrus without reservation. John has proven twice now that he has talent and a knack for details often missed. A novel that takes you to a place you might not know and educates and thrills you at the same time is hard to beat.

John's next novel is already on my wish list.

Ron Moore
This book is a rollicking good adventure combined with the thoughtful story of a young woman, Rika Teferi, who discovers a secret message on an ancient papyrus. That message turns out to be the last letter written by Queen Tiye to her young son Tutankhamen. The letter changes everything. It upsets views of Egyptian history, reveals Tiye's recipe for immortality, and brings together Rika and a young American, David Chamberlain, as they join forces to find Tiye's tomb. Of course the tomb may hold vast treasures that could help Rika's country of Eritrea, but Rika also is driven to learn about Tiye, who Rika feels may have a connection with her, even though the two women are separated in time by millennia.

The writing is unusual and beautiful, and I can see why this won an award. One can become personally attached to the characters, but, at the risk of spoiling the surprise of their stories, I hesitate to say more about them. The ending was not only heart stopping, but surprising, and, as with all good books, not what I expected.

I found myself wondering many times if the historical revelations could have actually happened. There is food for thought here, especially for one like me who has always been captivated by the possibility that history may actually be a bit different from what I've always believed. It was enough to keep me reading into the night, historically-fueled images abounding. "Papyrus A Thriller" does that over and over.
