I read Anne Barbour when I've had a surfeit of 'mistoricals.' I can trust her to write a good story and to not go off the rails period-wise.The synopsis gives you the bare bones; a defined plot and very well-drawn, believable characters give you an interesting story. It's a rather sober study of the 'other half' of two aristocratic families. The adopted son of a duke, Seth Lindow is his father's dedicated man of affairs and is ever aware of his 'separateness' from the rest of the family. The elder spinster Beckett daughter, Eden, riding herd on her spoiled younger sister since the parents are utterly ineffectual, dreams of living independently.
So we have two people forever on the outside looking in. Seth ~ accomplished, a gentleman, wealthy in his own right ~ burdened by a sense of inferiority drummed into him over the years by subtle, and not so subtle means, and Eden ~ doing her parents' job with the sister, creating brilliant art that is denigrated by her family.
My Laugh-O-Meter certainly wasn't in use for this one, but the story wasn't oppressive. Rather, it was an interesting, entirely believable tale of how such situations may have actually occurred. I can't say the novel was gripping or compelling, but it was quite interesting and the hea suited me.
The copy-editing threw me a curve. It was a bit unsettling to encounter constant misuse of periods in lieu of commas, e.g., "Her lady's maid. Betty..." I got used to it. -laughing-

Absolutely wonderful!!
The plot is plausible. The story is well written.
Really enjoyed the story with Seth being the main point of view. It's a great read and just a good book to settle down with when you need a little break. I did find it interesting that the author touched on a subject that brought the story around from hating a character to feeling for them. No spoilers so just take a chance and read it.
I am an Anne Barbour fan. She writes well and I never think of stopping before the end of her stories. However, some of her books I enjoy more than others. This one seemed quite somber throughout. Also, it bothered me that the parents were the villains and that the two romances were misdirected for so long before the HEA.
Another lovely story by this author. The story was well written and the story line easy to follow. The author as always drew the reader in and allowed us to experience her characters many emotions. The story had intrigue, suspense, surprise (really), betrayal, and romance. Again, as all love stories, two individuals meet, have feeling for each other but do not dare to voice them, they face obstacles but at the end find happiness.
An exemplary example of the best of the Regency Romance genre. This is a lovely Traditional Regency that effectively blends the truth of the period with the imaginative. While I might have wished that our Hero would have turned out to be more than what he is, it was true to the period. Sometimes the most worthy are not the most titled and what matters more is the relationships of the people involved. Bel and Zoe might not deserve their stations, but that's where they were put in life. Perhaps they will be happy. Eden and Seth certainly will be and since neither had ever aspired to such grand heights, their more modest situation will serve them well. I wish the ending had been longer. It ended rather suddenly and with only the most minimal of satisfactions. I think Seth and Eden should have had more time to discuss their future, it would have been nice to see the duke give this son the huge society wedding that had been foregone by the other. It would have cemented Seth's position in Society and assured him of his acceptance. And then they could have ridden off into the sunset on matching white palfreys. *Snicker* A Truly enjoyable and diverting read. Not to be missed! Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
I enjoyed this story about an H who is the adopted son of a Duke. I don't think I've ever read a book with this premise. Anyway the H is born of a commoner and adopted as a Duke's son and he eventually becomes the Duke's man of affairs. He makes the Duke even more wealthy and takes care of problems on his behalf. One of the Duke's problems is his son and heir who is a terrible man with an even worse reputation. The Duke wants the H a wife as soon as possible because he is worried that the son will come to a sticky end without producing his own heir. The H identifies the sister of the h as a possible candidate and along the way the 2 main characters become friends. The plot follows many twists and turns and there is even a 'big misunderstanding' between the H and ha towards the end. Fortunately the author doesn't drag it on for too long and I'm glad as I'm not fond of this as a plot device. If I have any issue with the book it's that the h's sister was extremely irritating and undeserving of her own hea.
